Bodegas Luis Cañas has quietly built an enviable reputation since they first started bottling their own wines in 1970 and produce an excellent range of all Rioja styles. Their white Viñas Viejas is a very well-balanced wine that, although aged in traditional-style barrels, is made in a modern, approachable way. After harvesting and barrel fermentation, the wine is aged for a few more months on the lees in new French and American oak. This gives it a rich creaminess and vanilla feel that pairs well with aromas of ripe stone fruit, red apple and lemon. Although a rich, full-bodied style, it has well-balanced acidity that leaves a nice clean finish.
